Adding and Subtracting Decimals

To add two decimal numbers, first check if they have the same number of digits to the right of the decimal point. If they don't, add zeros to the right of one of the numbers until they do.

Then, write one number on top of the other, lining up the decimal points vertically. Add as you would with whole numbers, and bring the decimal point straight down.

Example 1:

Add 13.492 and 7.8 .

Write two extra zeros at the end of 7.8 , and write the numbers vertically.

13. 4 9 2 + 7. 8 0 0 _

Now add.

1 1 3 1 . 4 9 2 + 7 . 8 0 0 _ 2 1 . 2 9 2

The answer is 21.292 .

A similar method works for subtraction.

Example 2:

Subtract 7.8 from 13.492 .

Write two extra zeros at the end of 7.8 , and write the numbers vertically.

13. 4 9 2 - 7. 8 0 0 _

Now subtract.

1 3. 4 9 2 7. 8 0 0 _ 5. 6 9 2

The answer is 5.692 .
