Over the years, students in first grade have had different standards that governed what they learned in their first year of all-day school. For some, memories of first grade included recognizing various words, learning to read, and learning basic math. Over the past few years though, the federal government has implemented new standards, called the Common Core, that define the level each first grade student is expected to meet by the end of the year. In many classrooms, those standards have changed the mathematics concepts that youths learn in their first grade year.

For many families, the Common Core is a topic that brings frustration. It doesn’t have to be that way for you and your first grade child, though. If you’re looking for a Learning Tool to help your first grader with his or her Common Core first grade math, you may want to take a look at Varsity Tutors’ Learning Tools, in particular the Flashcards for Common Core 1st Grade Math.

There are thousands of free flashcards online for Common Core 1st Grade Math; each of these cards focus on mathematical concepts that cover information first grade must know to be successful as they learn math.

For your first grade child’s use, there are more than 1,000 flashcards covering topics like reasoning shapes with their attributes; place value and properties of addition and subtraction; and equations for addition and subtraction. With Common Core standards, students are expected to be able to explain what makes a shape a certain shape, like what makes a triangle a triangle; the flashcards help your child learn to recognize a variety of shapes, from rectangles to hexagons, trapezoids to pentagons. Another subset of flashcards focuses on measurement and data. At the first grade level, this includes subjects like classifying and ordering objects based on size, reading charts and graphs, even telling time from pictures of clocks. You and your child will also have flashcards to review that will help them understand addition and subtraction, and solving those types of equations.

These online flashcards allow you and your child to take your time as you review various concepts. If you’re not sure your child fully understands topics covered by these flashcards, you can always go back to flashcards you’ve already answered together. There’s no penalty for skipping around in the set of online flashcards, and you’re able to go back to cards that contain problems you’ve already worked on. You will find a multiple-choice question on each card, with up to three answers. As soon as your child chooses an answer, you’ll know whether it is the correct or the wrong answer. These flashcards not only identify the correct answer, they also explain how to get that answer.
