Cross Products

In an equation of the form

a b = c d ,

we can multiply both sides by b d to get the equation

a d = b c .

This is known by many names: cross-multiplying, taking cross-products, the means-extremes property, or the reciprocal property.

Example:

Solve for x .

3 7 = x + 1 9

Use the means-extremes property to get a simpler equation.

3 ( 9 ) = 7 ( x + 1 )

Now simplify and solve.

27 = 7 x + 7 7 x = 20 x = 20 7
