The ISEE consists of four sections, one of which is the Lower Level Verbal section. In this section, your child is tested on linguistics with two different types of questions: identifying synonyms and inferring the missing word. These are the most important concepts necessary to progress in language classes. Your child will have under a minute for each of the 34 questions. Using Varsity Tutors’ Learning Tools, your child can prepare for the test using materials based on the ISEE Lower Level Verbal section. These are excellent to use alongside ongoing coursework, and easily paired with your child’s language arts class. The Question of the Day, for instance, offers a “pop quiz-like” way to test your child’s skills, and it also times them to better determine their preparedness for the test.

The ISEE Lower Level Verbal section is designed to measure your child’s verbal abilities in vocabulary, which can indicate a student’s reading level, and mind activity levels. Schools love this, and are always looking for students that have excellent scores in these areas. In addition, it can often mean that they have high verbal reasoning skills, which is valuable for anything from school to professional life. It is ideal to get the basics down early on to ensure that your child can keep up to speed later in life, as all of these skills are valuable later on down the line. With consistent practice and ongoing study, they can keep the information fresh, and ensure that it remains ingrained without having to overburden themselves with hard work.

When your child uses the Question of the Day, they can take it a step further by checking over the data offered by the Learning Tools. They can read over the explanation to the answer of the question to get a better understanding of why they got the answer right or wrong. These questions only take as long as your child needs them to, allowing them to determine if the area they tested that day is one that they should place a focus on during study. Your child might want to use the daily question to choose their study topic for the day, though it works just as well for a quick refresh before a quiz. The results can tell you a great deal of information, including your child’s percentile that day in comparison to others that answered the question.

The daily question is taken straight from the ISEE Lower Level Reading section practice tests offered among the other Learning Tools. These tests simulate the real test, offering similar questions, the same format, and covering the same topics. Your child may be questioned based on phrase-based sentences, such as style, sentence logic, intensity, conjunctions, or connotations. Other questions may cover concepts like context clues for word-based sentences, parts of speech, identifying synonyms for nouns, adjectives, verbs, and multiple meanings.

Your child can pair the Question of the Day with other Varsity Tutors’ Learning Tools, such as the Learn by Concept, flashcards, or practice tests. These allow for additional practice, whether they’re at home or on-the-go, or even right before the test.
