Ordered Pair

An ordered pair is a pair of numbers, ( x , y ) , written in a particular order.  The ordered pair ( x , y ) is not the same ordered pair as ( y , x ) .  An ordered pair is often used to represent a point on a coordinate plane or the solution to an equation in two variables.

Example:

Find an ordered pair which is a solution of the equation

y = x 3 ,

and plot the point on the coordinate plane.

The ordered pair ( 5 , 2 ) works, since 2 = 5 3 .

(Note that in higher math, an ordered pair doesn't have to be an ordered pair of numbers; you can have ordered pairs of sets, functions, or even ordered pairs!)
