Sum Identities

sin ( u + v ) = sin ( u ) cos ( v ) + cos ( u ) sin ( v )

cos ( u + v ) = cos ( u ) cos ( v ) sin ( u ) sin ( v )

tan ( u + v ) = tan ( u )  +  tan ( v ) 1  −  tan ( u ) tan ( v )

Difference Identities

sin ( u v ) = sin ( u ) cos ( v ) cos ( u ) sin ( v )

cos ( u v ) = cos ( u ) cos ( v ) + sin ( u ) sin ( v )

tan ( u v ) = tan ( u )  −  tan ( v ) 1  +  tan ( u ) tan ( v )

Example: 1

Rewrite in a simpler form using a trigonometric identity.

sin ( π 6 ) cos ( π 4 ) cos ( π 6 ) sin ( π 4 )

Using the difference formula for the sine, we get

sin ( π 6 π 4 ) = sin ( 2 π 3 π 12 )

= sin ( π 12 )

Example: 2

Evaluate: tan ( 15 ° )

tan ( 15 ° ) = tan ( 45 ° 30 ° )

= tan ( 45 ° )  −  tan ( 30 ° ) 1  +  tan ( 45 ° ) tan ( 30 ° )

= 1 + 3 3 1 + 1 3 3

= 3 3 3 + 3

= 3 3 3 + 3 3 3 3 3

= 12 6 3 6

= 2 3
